Michael Manske in Carniola

1. What does it take to be a blog superstar? What do you have that others don’t?

Blogging and stardom are two things that don’t go together. Even the world’s most-read bloggers are virtually unknown to the general public — unless they appear somewhere else, like on television or in movies. What makes a particular blog popular or not varies, of course, but what most of the big ones seem to have in common is that they’re passionately devoted to a particular subject (politics, technology, sex, etc..) and they work hard at it. I always know when a blog is doomed to death because the second or third post will be: “Hmmmm… so, what happened today? Well, not much. Ummmmm… That’s all for now.

2. Do you feel obligated to your public? Is there a severe quality control procedure going on at Carniola.org?

I think the commenters are essentially quality control. They will point out mistakes, or add more info, or otherwise give new life to a post. In my very first post, I implied that Slovenia was a “Balkan country.” I always laugh when I see it. Back then I could actually get away with saying something like that, because I was the only person reading Carniola. If I wrote that tomorrow, I’d get 50 comments calling me an ignorant asshole and a huge flamewar about whether Slovenia is a Balkan country or not. There are quite a few subjects like that — landmines, let’s say — that I’ve learned to avoid. But only through trial and error.
